Extremity Adjustments

Extremity chiropractors are trained to treat parts of the body besides the typical headaches, neck pain, and back pain. Extremity chiropractic adjusments are a way to adjust parts of your body that are away from your spine. This would include: knee pain, ankle pain, elbow pain, wrist pain, hand pain, hip pain, foot pain, leg pain, sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, bursitis, tendonitis, arthritis, fibromyalgia, and more

Extremity Chiropractic Adjustments are performed using a combination of manual techniques and instrumentation. Manual techniques include joint mobilization, muscle energy technique, myofascial release, trigger point therapy, and spinal manipulation. Instrumentation includes the Activator® Spinal Manipulation System, which uses low frequency vibration to stimulate nerves and muscles, and the Activator® Ultrasonic Device, which delivers ultrasound to joints and tissues. We mainly use the Activator Spinal Manipulation System, which most kids say feels like a massage.

Chiropractic care has been shown to reduce pain and improve function naturally in all parts of the body.

What does a chiropractic extremity adjustment mean?

An extremity is the uttermost part of the body, such as a hand or a foot. Since most people believe that chiropractic is limited to the neck and spine a lot of people say that extremity chiropractic adjustments are adjustments that are not part of the spinal column. This includes the ribs, shoulder and elbow, wrist and hand, hip, knee, ankle, foot, hands and toes.

Why would I want to have an extremity adjusted?

The body works as a whole not a bunch of individual parts working separately. When you correct one part of the body you are helping the whole body and all of its parts. That is why some people come in for pain and report they have better cholesterol or blood sugar level, sleep better, and/or less allergy symptoms.

How does chiropractic help the whole body?

Everything in the body is controlled by the brain. Receptors on the body send signals to the brain and the brain tells the receptors how to respond. You can tell when something touches you because of receptors.

Chiropractic just happened to find the area where the most receptors are in the body; the neck and spine. So if you were to get one area adjusted only then the neck and spine would be the most effective areas. But why stop there? Your whole body has receptors. Your brain works best if it knows about the whole body not just the neck and spine.

So if I feel pain in my ankle you can just adjust my ankle?

We can adjust just that area, but we wouldn't stop there. Like we mentioned before the body is a whole system that works together. A patient that says they have hip pain might have a shoulder issue that is causing pain in the hip (we see this a lot). Most chiropractors and medical doctors would focus on the area that is causing the pain, but we look for other areas in the body too that might be giving misinformation to the brain.

So how does gentle chiropractic help?

Patients report that our gentle adjustments are more effective and last longer than the traditional twist and pop adjustments they received from other chiropractors.

Signs or possible symptoms of an extremity issue that may be helped by a chiropractor:

  • Extremity pain or pain in the extremity joint
  • Weakness in an extremity or joint
  • Stiffness in the extremity
  • Immobility of an extremity joint
  • Numbness or tingling in an extremity
  • Catching or locking of an extremity joint

The goal of adjusting extremities is to restore the body/brain connection which allows it to have normal and proper function.
